Gandhinagar: Around 1,000 villages in eight districts of Gujarat are reeling under an acute drinking water crisis, the state government has said, cautioning that the crisis may persist for two more months.
The affected districts are Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Dahod, Panchmahal and Amreli. In Surendranagar alone, 268 villages are facing the crisis.
Rupani, also Gujarat BJP chief, said the supply has been increased from 30 litres per day per person to 50 litres in Jamnagar, Porbandar, Dahod, Amreli, Junagadh and other cities. “We are supplying Narmada water wherever possible. The police would prevent water theft from Narmada canals,” he said. Surendranagar residents have approached the local administration thrice, demanding adequate water arrangements. Villages in Chotila, and remote areas of Thangadh are badly affected.
Jamnagar is also facing problems. At Chur village, residents are getting water once in 15 days. Village sarpanch Bhikhu Paniya said water released from Sani dam was not enough. The state has not yet sought Central help.
