Indra Nooyi, the former chief executive officer of PepsiCo, is being considered for the position of World Bank President by the Trump administration. The Indian-origin Nooyi, who stepped down from her role at PepsiCo in August 2018 after being at the helm for 12 years, is being courted as an “administration ally.” Nooyi’s name for the top post at the World Bank, was proposed by Ivanka Trump, who has been given powers to select a nominee. The current World Bank president Jim Yong Kim will step down in February.
The process of choosing the President of the World Bank is still in its initial stages, and there are many contenders for the role that will ultimately be chosen by Trump, who is known to go by gut instinct. However, Trump is also known to rely on Ivanka’s judgement when making appointments and Ivanka considers Nooyi a “mentor.” In a tweet after Nooyi stepped down as PepsiCo CEO, she had said, “Indra, you are a mentor + inspiration to so many, myself included. I am deeply grateful for your friendship. Thank you for your passionate engagement on issues that benefit the people of this country, and beyond.”
There is no indication, however, that Nooyi will take up the World Bank post if offered. Also Nooyi’s anti-Trump remarks after his win may go against her.
