Welcome CWG
By Dr Arvind Kumar
Tomorrow is the pride moment for the entire nation to host the XIX Commonwealth Games, the second biggest sport event after the Olympic Games. The Government and the people of India deserve kudos for hosting such a gala sport event despite many odds like uneasy situation in Kashmir valley and havoc wreaked by unprecedented rains and floods. Sports bring prestige, sense of pride and confidence among the people in general and sportspersons in particular. Legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand won laurels for India when it was reeling under the British Colonial Yoke. However, in the post-independent era, our performance in the arena of international sports has been not satisfactory be it in the Asian Games or Commonwealth Games or the Olympic Games. One can hope that the ongoing CWG in India will throw up new legends who can win laurels for the nation.
There is a need to bring soprts out of the bureaucratic clutches and promote them in a sportsmanship manner. Other sports events should be made as attractive and lucrative as Cricket or Tennis. There is no dearth of talent. What is required is proper selection system and opportunity and no political interference.
