Hosur, 3 August, 2011: AREVA T&D India’s Transmission business (part of Alstom Grid) flags off India’s first 1200 kV Capacitive Voltage Transformer (CVT) at Hosur.
AREVA T&D India made significant investments in the country in 2009 to set up new factories at Greenfield sites in Vadodara, Hosur and Padappai and upgraded its existing factories to manufacture globally acclaimed advanced technology products and solutions in transmission. This was a step towards AREVA’s long standing commitment to offer world class products and service to its valued customers. AREVA T&D India today has the capability to provide the entire range of all transmission equipments upto 765kV and above, including power transformers (EHV 800kV DC and UHV 1200kV AC).
POWERGRID is in the process of establishing a 1200 kV Ultra High Voltage AC transmission system at Bina. This development will facilitate equipment’s field testing before deploying the technology for commercial purposes. Successful completion of test station at 1200kV will be a major accomplishment of POWERGRID to upgrade the existing transmission voltage and create a highly advanced transmission corridor.
AREVA T&D India supports this project by providing 1200 kV capacitor voltage transformer (CVTs), disconnectors and digital current transformers. These high end products have been developed, manufactured and tested at AREVA T&D India’s world class factories at Hosur and Padappai (Chennai). This is a significant nation building initiative by AREVA T&D to take the transmission infrastructure of the country to the world class level.
Commenting on the endeavor, Mr. Rathin Basu Managing Director, Areva T&D India Limited said, “The launch of AREVA T&D’s first Ultra high voltage 1200kV CVT manufactured and tested locally with superior technology is a major landmark in the Indian Power industry. Anticipating the growth of Extra High Voltage and Ultra High transmission network in India, AREVA T&D commissioned world class manufacturing plants across the country to address this need. We are proud to be associated with POWERGRID to deliver this first 1200 kV CVT for their National Test Station at Bina. This initiative stands proof to the fact that our Company is well positioned to serve the current and future ultra high voltage requirements of India with locally manufactured transmission products.”
Capacitor voltage transformer (CVT)
A capacitor voltage transformer (CVT), is a transformer used in transmission lines to step down extra high voltage signals and provide a low voltage signal, for measurement or to operate a protective relay. In its most basic form the device consists of three parts: two capacitors across which the transmission line signal is split, an inductive element to tune the device to the line frequency, and a transformer to isolate and further step down the voltage for the instrumentation or protective relay. The device has at least four terminals: a terminal for connection to the high voltage signal, a ground terminal, and two secondary terminals which connect to the instrumentation or protective relay. |
*Important Note:
The high voltage activities described in this press release are under the operational control of Alstom Grid and carried out in India through Areva T&D India limited, a company publically listed on the stock exchanges of India.
On 7 June 2010, the global activities of Areva T&D were acquired by a consortium of Alstom and Schneider Electric. Following this acquisition, the High Voltage Transmission and thePower Electronics activities are to be carried on under the control of Alstom and the Medium Voltage activities under control of Schneider Electric.
In India on 3 December 2010, following the conclusion of a mandatory tender offer, Alstom and Schneider Electric announced that they had assumed operational control of Areva T&D India. The respective businesses will now be segregated in terms of a scheme of arrangement through a court process.
However, Areva T&D India will continue to operate under the Areva T&D name until the appropriate judicial process, according to Indian regulations, have been completed.
