14 February Valentine’s Day
By Dr Arvind Kumar
Valentine’s Day is the right occasion to make this mometous event as a turning point in our life which is otherwise afflicted with workplace stress, diverse ambitions, family problems, scramble for success and temptations to cheat. Recent years have witnessed this solemn day, devoted to lovers and companions, being turned into more of a commercial and marketing opportunity than a celebration of love by aggressive consumerism. However, the day still retains its piety in being a day to take stock of one’s social, familial and friendly relationship and to make it work so that it adds zest, security and peace to an already hassled life.
Even in the hurly-burly of the urban chaos and the small-town confusion in India, we need to stop for a while on this first Valentine’s Day of the second decade of the millennium today and ponder whether is it just going to be an occasion to party hard and shop for gifts or will it be a time to quietly think and take firm steps to make our romantic relationship a rewarding one. Apart from sharing love with our friends/relatives and other dear ones, we should also share our love and compassion for the orphans and destitutes as well. The real celebration of such solemn occasions lies in sharing one’s happiness with those who have been denied this bliss. Instaed of partying hard, we should donate that money to the orphanges.
